MINNA, Nigeria — The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has formally disowned a viral social media post regarding the 2027 Niger State governorship election, calling the write-up unauthorized and “misleading.”
In a statement released Thursday, Idris clarified that the article, which sparked intense debate across digital platforms, was drafted and published by a junior aide without his knowledge, consent, or approval.
“The publication of this write-up was entirely without my consent,” Idris said in the statement. “It is misleading and could create confusion about the ministry’s position on political matters. I wish to categorically disown the article and clarify that it does not reflect my thoughts or directives.”
The minister emphasized that the views expressed in the post do not represent his personal stance or the official position of the Ministry of Information and National Orientation.
Following the breach of protocol, Idris announced the immediate suspension of the aide responsible for the post. An investigation has been launched, and the staff member is expected to explain how the article was disseminated without undergoing the required ministerial clearance.
The incident has prompted a stern reminder to all ministry staff regarding the strict protocols governing public statements, particularly those involving sensitive political topics. Idris stressed that all official communications must receive formal authorization before they are shared with the public.
Political analysts noted that the swift disclaimer highlights the growing tension and sensitivity surrounding the 2027 election cycle. In states like Niger, where political alliances are closely watched, unauthorized statements from high-ranking federal officials can significantly alter local dynamics.
Government officials have also expressed concern over the proliferation of unverified political content on social media, warning that such misinformation can destabilize public discourse.
Idris concluded his statement by urging the public and media organizations to disregard the unauthorized post and rely exclusively on official channels for accurate information from the ministry.
