Nigerians and South Africans React as Okon Wins 400m Gold at World Championships

South Africa’s Udeme Okon made headlines at the 2024 World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima, Peru, by clinching the gold medal in the 400m final with a stunning comeback, finishing in 45.69 seconds. The victory, celebrated widely on social media, highlighted Okon’s dual heritage, as he has ties to both Nigeria and South Africa, sparking reactions from citizens of both nations.

Okon’s triumph comes amidst a backdrop of recent tensions between the two countries, notably surrounding the controversy involving Miss Chidinma Adetshina. Despite this, Okon’s achievement has been embraced across borders, with both Nigerians and South Africans applauding his success.

According to Chatnewstv Online, the 2024 World Athletics U20 Championships—commonly referred to by its former name, the World Junior Championships—is an international competition for junior athletes. The event, held in Lima, Peru, runs from August 27 to 31, 2024.

On social media, Okon’s Instagram profile, under the handle #udeme_sprints, proudly displays both the Nigerian and South African flags, signifying his strong connections to both nations. This has further fueled discussions and celebrations online, as World Athletics highlighted his victory in a video post on X (formerly Twitter), capturing the thrilling moment when Okon surged ahead in the final stretch to secure his gold medal.

Reactions on social media have been overwhelmingly positive. South Africans and Nigerians alike have shared their thoughts, with some humorously debating Okon’s nationality and others focusing on the pride his victory brings to both nations.

Tebogo Koma, an X user with the handle #TheGeopol, commented, “That name doesn’t sound South African—‘Udeme Okon’—but if he’s legal, then we fully support him.”

Another user, Saint-mykel (#Saint_mykel88), chimed in with, “That’s an Akwa Ibom boy, lol,” referencing Okon’s Nigerian roots.

Tumishang Mashabela (#tumimashabela) added, “No identity fraud, I hope. Nigerian first, proudly South African. Congratulations, young man.”

Despite the recent tensions stemming from Miss Chidinma Adetshina’s controversial withdrawal from the Miss South Africa pageant due to her dual citizenship, Okon’s win seems to have been a unifying moment, bringing both nations together in celebration.

Navneet K Singh, another X user, captured the sentiment well: “What a stunning finish by Udeme Okon! The way he powered through in the home straight was nothing short of sensational. South Africa has a new star on the track! #U20Championships #Athletics”

World Athletics, the governing body for track and field, cross-country, road running, and race walking, played a crucial role in spotlighting Okon’s victory. Established in 1912 as the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF), the organization rebranded in 2019 to modernize its image and broaden its global appeal. Headquartered in Monaco, World Athletics continues to support athletes worldwide, fostering the growth and development of athletics at all levels.

Okon’s remarkable performance at the 2024 World Athletics U20 Championships not only marks a significant milestone in his career but also serves as a reminder of the unifying power of sports.
