ABUJA, Nigeria — Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from his position, citing deteriorating health, the presidency confirmed Monday.
The resignation was announced in a statement issued by the President’s spokesman, Chief Bayo Onanuga.
In a letter addressed to President Bola Tinubu, dated Dec. 1, 2025, Badaru stated that his resignation was due to his health.
“Badaru cited deteriorating health as the reason for his resignation,” the statement confirmed.
The 63-year-old Badaru had joined President Tinubu’s cabinet on Aug. 21, 2023. He previously served two terms as the Governor of Jigawa State between 2015 and 2023.
His resignation comes at a critical time, amid a national security emergency declared by President Tinubu. The administration is currently focused on strengthening security across the country, with further briefings on its strategy expected soon.
President Tinubu is anticipated to forward the name of a new Defence Minister to the Senate for confirmation later this week.
