Nissan to Expand Use of Low-Emission Steel in Japan

Company aims for FY2025 use to be five times higher

YOKOHAMA, Japan (CHATNEWSTV) — Nissan Motor Co. said Friday it will quintuple its use of low-CO2-emission steel in Japan by 2025 as part of its push to cut carbon emissions across its supply chain.

The company, which began using so-called green steel in its vehicles in 2023, said the expansion would significantly reduce emissions tied to material production.

“Decarbonization is a priority for Nissan as we work toward carbon neutrality by 2050,” the company said in a statement. “Increasing our use of low-emission steel is a crucial step in reducing our environmental impact.”

Steel makes up about 60% of a vehicle’s weight, and traditional production methods rely on high-emission blast furnaces. The green steel Nissan uses is produced through methods that reduce iron ore with lower-carbon materials or replace blast furnaces with electric arc furnaces.

Nissan said it will now source green steel from multiple suppliers, including Kobe Steel’s Kobenable® Steel, Nippon Steel’s NSCarbolex® Neutral, JFE Steel’s JGreeX®, and POSCO’s carbon-reduction steel. These products cut emissions using a mass-balance approach, which tracks CO2 reductions across the manufacturing process.

Nissan has pledged to reduce lifecycle emissions from its vehicles by 30% by 2030 and reach full carbon neutrality by 2050.
