BRUSSELS (CHATNEWSTV) — The Nordic Baltic countries (NB8) have issued a joint statement expressing concern over Gazprom’s decision to halt natural gas supplies to Moldova as of January 1, 2025, a move they view as an attempt to destabilize the country politically and economically.
“We note Gazprom’s decision to cease gas supplies to Moldova as of January 1st, 2025. This action is aimed at undermining political and economic stability in Moldova,” the statement said.
The NB8 countries, which include Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden, praised Moldova for its efforts to maintain stability in its gas and electricity supplies during these challenging times. The countries also committed to collaborating with the European Commission and other international partners to bolster support for Moldova.
“We will work with the European Commission and other key partners to be ready to step up international assistance to Moldova,” the statement continued. “Recent infrastructure improvements and increased transmission capacities have significantly enhanced Moldova’s resilience to external energy pressures, reflecting the country’s commitment to strengthening its energy security.”
The statement reaffirmed the Nordic Baltic countries’ commitment to supporting Moldova in navigating the current energy crisis and advancing the reform of its energy sector, emphasizing that such efforts are crucial for Moldova’s sustainable development and the broader stability of the region, particularly in light of ongoing geopolitical tensions.
“Our support for Moldova is essential not only for its own energy security but also for the stability of the wider region, particularly in the context of Europe’s broader energy security goals and the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine,” the joint statement concluded.
