COPENHAGEN (CHATNEWSTV) — The leaders of the Nordic and Baltic nations reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine on Friday, pledging increased military assistance and calling for stronger security guarantees for the war-torn country.
“We stand fully and firmly behind Ukraine,” the leaders of Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden said in a joint statement. “Ukraine must be able to prevail against Russia’s war of aggression to ensure a just and lasting peace.”
The statement, issued on February 14, emphasized the war’s broader implications for European and transatlantic security, warning that its outcome would have “fundamental and long-lasting effects.”
The leaders highlighted their countries’ role as some of the largest per-capita contributors of military aid to Kyiv and vowed to further bolster support.
“We are engaging with Ukraine, the United States, and all our NATO Allies and EU partners on how to achieve peace through strength,” the statement said, stressing that Ukraine and Europe must be part of any negotiations for a lasting resolution.
In addition to assisting Ukraine, the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their own national defenses. “We are investing strongly in our own defence,” they said. “We are determined to further strengthen our collective security and to shoulder our responsibility for peace in Europe.”
The statement follows recent high-level meetings, including discussions between Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Stockholm, where the two leaders were seen walking together in the Swedish capital.
