HELSINKI (Chatnewstv.com) — The Nordic countries are moving to build combined air forces capable of operating together in peacetime and emergencies, Finland’s Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen announced following a meeting of Nordic defense ministers Tuesday.
The ministers, who met in Helsinki on Nov. 12, 2025, committed to deepening military integration to strengthen NATO’s deterrence in the High North.
“We have made good progress towards this goal,” Häkkänen said. “Together, the Nordic countries will have more than 200 new-generation fighters by the start of the next decade.”
Häkkänen stressed that while fighter numbers are growing, work remains to ensure full integration.
“We will further deepen our cooperation so that we can achieve a combined capability to plan and conduct air operations across the Nordic countries. This is important for strengthening NATO’s deterrence and defence in the High North,” he said.
Military mobility was also a key focus, with Häkkänen calling its improvement “a matter of great importance” given the current security landscape. The countries are continuing cooperation on harmonizing military mobility corridors, a process launched last November.
Regarding defense materiel, the ministers agreed to continue strengthening Nordic industrial capacity, specifically in ammunition production, to bolster regional security of supply.
The meeting was attended for the first time by the Chiefs of Defence from all Nordic countries, a move intended to support strategic and military planning.
