UNITED NATIONS (Chatnewstv.com) — Nordic countries on Monday condemned Russia’s recent violation of Estonian airspace, warning that Moscow’s actions pose a serious threat to international security and vowing continued support for Ukraine.
Speaking on behalf of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard told the UN Security Council that the September 19 incursion marked “a serious violation of Estonian airspace and thus of its territorial integrity.”
“The Nordics stand in full solidarity with Estonia,” Stenergard said.
“By violating Estonian airspace, Russia has again shown its reckless and lawless behavior.”
She noted that the Security Council held an emergency session earlier this month after Russian aircraft entered Polish airspace and that Romania’s airspace has also been breached.
“We urge Russia to immediately stop, and to bear its responsibility as a permanent member of this Council,” she said.
Nordic states said the incidents reflect a wider campaign of “malicious activities” by Moscow, which they argue further underscores the threat Russia poses to regional and global security.
“Over the past weeks, Russia has increased its attacks against Ukraine,” Stenergard told the council, citing Ukrainian reports of more than 1,500 drone strikes, 1,280 guided aerial bombs and 50 missiles launched in a single week. “These are not the actions of a country that seeks peace.”
She said the Nordic countries remain committed to supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and to pursuing “a comprehensive, just and lasting peace based on the UN Charter and international law.”
“Russia could end its war tomorrow,” she added. “Until it does, the Nordics stand undeterred in face of Russia’s illegal actions.”
