OSLO (CHATNEWSTV) — A fire at Ukraine’s Chornobyl nuclear power plant, reportedly caused by a drone strike, has sparked renewed concerns over nuclear safety amid Russia’s ongoing war, Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide said Friday.
“The Russian warfare continues to pose a major risk to nuclear safety in Ukraine,” Eide said in a statement, condemning the latest incident at the New Safe Confinement protecting reactor 4.
Norway has collaborated with Ukrainian authorities on nuclear safety for years and has ramped up support through the Nansen Programme over the past two years, Eide noted. The country also backs the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) efforts in Ukraine.
“The latest incident at Chornobyl demonstrates the importance of nuclear safety in Ukraine,” he added.
There were no immediate reports of radiation leaks from the site. The IAEA has yet to provide further details.
