OSLO, Norway (Chatnewstv.com) — Norway’s foreign minister on Tuesday condemned Israel’s strike in Qatar’s capital, saying the attack on Hamas leadership endangered fragile ceasefire negotiations in Gaza.
“I am deeply concerned about the latest escalation in the Middle East and the consequences of today’s Israeli attack on Hamas’ leadership in Qatar’s capital, Doha,” Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide said in a statement.
He said carrying out such an attack in a residential area was “a serious violation of international law.”
“We condemn this attack and express solidarity with Qatar following this breach of its territory,” Eide said.
Hamas representatives based in Doha had been engaged in U.S.-, Qatari- and Egyptian-mediated talks for a ceasefire in Gaza, including a potential release of Israeli hostages.
“This attack could make it even more difficult to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, urgently needed both for the Palestinian civilian population and the Israeli hostages,” Eide said.
The minister also denounced what he called “yesterday’s terrible terrorist attack in Jerusalem,” stressing that “such violence against civilians cannot be accepted.”
“We do not need another escalation now. What is needed more than ever is both an immediate end to the war in Gaza and a political solution to the long-standing conflict,” Eide said.
