ABUJA, Nigeria (CHATNEWSTV) — The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has issued a formal reprimand to Akwa United FC of Uyo following reports that the club’s Welfare Officer, Mr. Asuquo, threatened the crew of Propel Sports Africa (PSA), the league’s Over the Top (OTT) broadcast streaming partners.
In a letter titled “Warning on Unprofessional Conduct of Club Officials,” the NPFL expressed concern over the incident that occurred during Akwa United’s Match Day 16 fixture against Bendel Insurance on Monday, December 10, 2024. According to the letter, Asuquo harassed and intimidated the technical staff of Propel Sports Africa, actions that the league warned could have severe consequences for its contractual obligations.
“Acts of this nature expose the league to significant legal risks, reputation damage, and financial costs,” stated the letter, signed by NPFL Chief Operating Officer Davidson Owumi. “Such behavior falls far short of the expected standards of professionalism and contravenes the principles underpinning the league’s operations.”
The league emphasized that any future occurrences of similar conduct would result in severe sanctions against both the club and the offending official.
The club has been directed to take steps to prevent a recurrence of such incidents. Asuquo, who was identified in video footage of the incident, has been invited to appear before a disciplinary panel on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, in Abuja.
“In light of the seriousness of this matter, you are invited to appear before an inquest to explain your actions and provide any necessary clarification,” the letter stated. “Failure to attend may lead to further disciplinary actions.”
The NPFL’s warning underscores the league’s commitment to maintaining professionalism and protecting its partnerships.
