Agency Report –
Alexander Nübel has not given up hope being named first choice goalkeeper at Bayern Munich once veteran Manuel Neuer retires.
Nübel, 28, is playing on loan at VfB Stuttgart on a deal until 2026, with his Bayern contract until 2030. The 38-year-old Neuer has had his contract extended until 2026.
“If Manuel retires at some point, I hope that I’ll then be able to play in goal for FC Bayern. I’m looking forward to that time, but at the same time I’m relatively relaxed,” Nübel told weekend paper Welt am Sonntag.
“If I go back and get the option to be number one in Munich, I will definitely fight to be number one. That’s for sure. I’m looking forward to that too.”
Nübel came to Munich in 2020 and was seen as Neuer’s potential successor. But after getting very little playing time he went to Monaco on loan 2021-2023 before the next loan spell at Stuttgart.
The January arrival in Munich of youngster Jonas Urbig, who is deputising for the injured Neuer at the moment, has led to a fresh debate who will succeed Neuer.
Nübel said he was not surprised by the signing of Urbig because back-up Daniel Peretz was injured at the time.
He has won two Germany caps and hopes to be named number one in the absence of the injured first choice Marc Andre ter Stegen for next week’s Nations League quarter-finals against Italy.
Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann is the other candidate, with coach Julian Nagelsmann saying he will name a number one for the tie.
Looking at the number one position overall, Nübel said that “of course I want to play as many international matches as possible. But we happen to have many super good goalkeepers in Germany.”
