ABUJA — Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately suspend his “retreat” in France and return home to confront Nigeria’s escalating security crisis.
In a post on X Wednesday, Mr. Obi said the president’s absence amid widespread violence and killings across the country reflects a “retreating CEO” abandoning a failing company.
“I am compelled at this time in our lives as a nation to call on our retreating president’s attention to the security challenges at home,” Obi wrote.
“This urgent call has become necessary following the rising incidents of crimes and criminalities all over Nigeria with an apparent absence of governance.”
He said over 150 Nigerians have been killed in Plateau and Zamfara States in the two weeks since President Tinubu left the country.
“In the North East, Borno State leaders are bemoaning the return of insurgency. In the South East, the story is the same: killings and abduction,” he added.
Mr. Obi criticized what he called a lack of urgency from the presidency, especially when Nigeria, in his words, “is in distress.”
“The CEO of the troubling company called Nigeria is retreating in a faraway land in France from the company’s headquarters,” he said.
He emphasized that the safety of citizens is the core responsibility of government.
“One wonders the type of retreat going on in another country where peace has been secured by their leaders, while blood continues to flow in ours,” Obi said.
“I urge Mr. President to quickly suspend whatever he is doing in France and rush home to take responsibility.”
