ABUJA, Nigeria (ChatnewsTV) — Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, stated Tuesday that the movement could explore new avenues to serve Nigerians if the Labour Party fails to uphold principles of good governance and accountability. In an interview with Arise News, Tanko emphasized that the Obidient Movement, initially rallied around Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, has now grown beyond party lines.
“The Obedient Movement is bigger than the Labour Party,” Tanko said. “We have supporters everywhere—academics, traders, even members from other political parties. If it becomes inevitable that the Labour Party is not ready to embrace good governance, we will have to look for another opportunity.”
Reflecting on the 2023 general elections, Tanko noted structural gaps within the Labour Party that impacted the movement’s reach. “We were accused, rightly so, of not having structures in all of the polling units,” he said. “The Labour Party did not cover 1,760 polling units, and we’re now working to establish a solid foundation across all units.”
Tanko’s comments come as the Obidient Movement grapples with internal concerns about Labour Party lawmakers, whom some members feel are not delivering on reform-oriented promises. To address this, Tanko said the movement is focusing on building infrastructure and mobilizing support nationwide, especially in regions that previously lacked a Labour Party presence.
Amid rising public dissatisfaction with some Labour Party representatives, Tanko stressed that the movement’s primary commitment remains to Nigerians. “We are getting prepared and ready to face the challenges,” he said, adding that the Obidient Movement is determined to pursue avenues that promote accountability, regardless of party affiliations.
