ABUJA, Nigeria (Chatnewstv.com) — The Obidient Movement on Friday rejected an ultimatum issued by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, saying the party was shifting the goalposts on earlier agreements within their coalition.
In a statement signed by its national coordinator, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, the movement said Obi had aligned with the coalition’s platform after the Anambra governorship election, with the adoption extending to the 2027 general elections.
“We are therefore concerned as to why the resolution is now being altered midway into the agreement,” Tanko said.
The movement stressed that Obi, who was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023, is known for wide consultations before taking major political decisions. “He did so before joining the coalition, and he must also do so before responding to any ultimatum,” the statement read.
The group also raised questions about how the ADC intends to zone its presidential ticket and principal offices within the coalition, warning that issues of equity and fairness must guide the process.
“Considering that the presidency is currently held by the South, issues of equity and fairness must guide such decisions if the party truly aims to secure victory in the 2027 elections,” the statement said.
Tanko emphasized that Obi was not driven by personal ambition. “H.E. Peter Obi is not desperate to be president of Nigeria. His ultimate mission is to see Nigeria work — to lift people out of poverty, to improve the economy, education, healthcare, and security,” he said.
The Obidient Movement said it would continue to press for inclusivity and justice in the coalition as it prepares for the next general election.
