VIENNA (CHATNEWSTV) — The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Troika on Friday condemned the Georgian government’s violent crackdown on peaceful protests, calling for immediate action to uphold democratic principles and human rights in the country.
“We strongly condemn the Georgian authorities’ violent response to peaceful protests by civil society, independent media, and politicians,” the OSCE Troika, comprising Malta, North Macedonia, and Finland, said in a joint statement.
The statement urged Georgia to end repressive tactics, including arbitrary detentions and physical violence, and to protect freedoms of assembly and expression in accordance with its international obligations.
“All allegations of violence, election fraud, and attacks against democratic values and principles must be credibly investigated,” the statement read, emphasizing that those responsible must be held accountable.
The Troika also called for the repeal of laws that contradict Georgia’s commitments to democratic norms and human rights.
The Troika reaffirmed its readiness to support Georgia through the OSCE’s tools and expertise, encouraging dialogue to address the current crisis.
“We stand with the Georgian people as they express their aspiration for a democratic and European future, as codified in the Georgian constitution,” the Troika said, underscoring Georgia’s alignment with the principles of the Helsinki Final Act and the Charter of Paris.
The statement comes amid ongoing protests in Georgia over allegations of government overreach and a perceived backslide in democratic governance. Georgian authorities have yet to respond to the OSCE’s condemnation.
