Pakistani Born Mehtab Syed Named FBI Special Agent in Charge of Salt Lake City Field Office

WASHINGTON (CHATNEWSTV) — The FBI has named Pakistani born Mehtab Syed as the special agent in charge of its Salt Lake City Field Office, the agency announced Wednesday.

Syed, who most recently led the Cyber and Counterintelligence Division in Los Angeles, joined the FBI as a special agent in 2005. She was first assigned to the New York Field Office, where she worked counterterrorism cases and was part of the crisis negotiation and rapid deployment teams.

In 2008, Syed deployed to Islamabad, Pakistan, serving as acting assistant legal attaché and coordinating with intelligence and security services across multiple governments. She later worked at the FBI’s Counterterrorism Division in Washington as program manager for extraterritorial cases in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Her career includes leadership roles in counterintelligence and cyber operations, including at the FBI’s New York Joint Terrorism Task Force and the agency’s Newark office. In 2022, she was promoted to section chief of China Operations at FBI headquarters.

Before becoming a special agent, Syed worked as a financial analyst and as a contract linguist for the FBI. She holds a finance degree from Adelphi University.
