Patriotic Elders Forum Urges Nigerians To Support Constitutional Review

The National Patriotic Elders Forum has urged Nigerians to support the current Constitution Review being undertaken by the National Assembly aimed at moving the nation forward.

The forum made the call in a communique issued at the end of its meeting in Kano on Saturday.

In the communique, which was signed by the National Chairman of the forum, Ambassador Bature AbdulAziz, the group said this is necessary to enable the nation have “an acceptably reviewed Constitution.”

It also asked the Constitution Review Committee to carry Nigerians along in order to ensure the success of the exercise.

According to the Forum, critical issues affecting the nation such as federalism, state police and local government autonomy are being deliberated upon by the body, ”and it is therefore imperative that citizens are carried along so as to ensure a credible process.”

“It is also important that members of this forum are also involved in the process because as elders, we believe we have robust contributions to make to the exercise.

“Nigerians should be given opportunity to give their inputs on issues before the Constitution Review Committee so as to ensure good representation and a successful exercise.

“Let the committee also enlighten the citizens on its workings, the issues before it, and procedures of making their own contributions to the review process.

“We believe that the chairman and members of the Constitution Review Committee are tested and trusted people of proven integrity who will do the needful to our constitution,” the forum added.
