Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State has expelled Adolphus Wabara, who serves as the chairman of the party’s board of trustees (BoT).
The decision was communicated in a report released by the Abia State Executive Committee (SEC) on Tuesday.
Wabara’s troubles began in February when he was suspended by the SEC due to allegations of engaging in anti-party activities. At the time, Abraham Amah, the PDP state chairman, announced that the suspension would last for one month while a seven-member disciplinary committee conducted an investigation. The SEC accused Wabara of undermining the party by “unilaterally” endorsing Alex Otti, the current governor of Abia and a member of the Labour Party (LP), for re-election, just five months after Otti took office.
In response to Wabara’s suspension, the PDP national working committee (NWC) intervened, labeling the SEC’s action as “reckless and unconstitutional.”
The NWC clarified that no state working committee holds the authority to suspend or impose disciplinary measures on a member of the national executive committee (NEC) without consulting the NWC, as stipulated in Section 57 (7) of the PDP constitution.
The SEC, in statement signed by Amah and Peter Nwaokonko, Secretary of the PDP in Abia, said “no member, regardless of status, is above the party’s rules and regulations”.
“The Abia State PDP reaffirms its commitment to upholding party discipline and ensuring that all members operate within the framework of the PDP Constitution (2017 as amended),” the report reads.
The SEC said the party “remains resolute in preserving unity, loyalty, and respect for party structures”.
