Presidency Silent After Viral Video Allegedly Shows Wike Intoxicated During Indian PM’s Visit

ABUJA, (ChatnewsTV) —The Nigerian presidency has remained tight-lipped following the circulation of a viral video that captures an awkward encounter between Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Abuja. The footage, which quickly spread across social media platforms, has prompted widespread speculation, with many alleging that Mr. Wike appeared intoxicated during the high-level meeting.

In the video, Mr. Wike is seen walking briskly ahead of Prime Minister Modi, who was flanked by his security detail and aides. Stopping abruptly, the Nigerian minister seemed to stiffen in an attempt to salute, waiting for the Indian leader to catch up. The two exchanged a brief handshake before an evidently agitated Wike navigated through a narrow space between Mr. Modi and his entourage, nearly colliding with the Indian leader in the process.

“It was quite embarrassing to watch,” said a social media user reacting to the clip. “Wike’s body language was erratic, and he certainly seemed off-balance. For an official event, this was unexpected.”

Observers have noted that the presidency’s muted response contrasts sharply with its typical readiness to defend government figures. Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga, who is known for issuing lengthy statements in response to criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, has notably refrained from addressing the incident. This silence has only fueled more speculation online, where “Wike intoxicated” trended on X (formerly Twitter) for several hours.

“What is more concerning is the fact that the presidency, which is usually quick to counter any perceived negative portrayal of this administration, has said nothing,” remarked political analyst Joseph Okoh. “It raises questions about what really happened during that encounter.”

The video, which also showed Mr. Wike breaking diplomatic protocol, has attracted comments from international observers. A former diplomat, who requested anonymity, highlighted the potential security risk of the minister’s unpredictable movements during a sensitive diplomatic interaction.

“You could see the surprise on the faces of the Indian delegation, especially the security personnel,” the diplomat said. “Such behavior, especially during formal engagements, can lead to misunderstandings.”

As questions linger over FCT minister’s conduct, calls for an official statement from the presidency continue to grow. Some Nigerians are demanding a clear explanation regarding the circumstances of the incident, especially considering Mr. Wike’s position as a prominent member of President Tinubu’s kitchen cabinet.
