ABUJA, Nigeria (CHATNEWSTV) — Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed heartfelt condolences to the United States following the death of former President Jimmy Carter, calling him “a beacon of service to humanity.”
Carter, who died at 100, served as the 39th U.S. president and dedicated his post-presidential years to promoting peace, democracy, and public health. President Tinubu highlighted Carter’s efforts to combat diseases like Guinea worm and river blindness in Nigeria, describing them as transformative.
“President Carter showed us all how to remain relevant and impactful after leaving the esteemed position of President of the United States,” Tinubu said in a statement released Saturday. “He exemplified grace, dignity, and a profound respect for humanity.”
Carter’s ties to Nigeria date back to his historic 1978 visit, during which he stayed at the State House in Marina, Lagos. Tinubu recalled the visit as a turning point in U.S.-Africa relations, cementing a partnership centered on Nigeria.
The Nigerian leader praised Carter’s work through The Carter Center, noting its pivotal role in eradicating tropical diseases in the country. “His contributions have significantly improved the lives of many Nigerians,” Tinubu said.
As a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Carter’s legacy extends beyond his presidency, Tinubu noted, underscoring his example of leadership that prioritizes humanity over personal ambition.
“President Carter’s legacy of decency, character, and humanity will inspire generations to embrace the true essence of leadership,” Tinubu said, expressing hope that his contributions would remain a guiding light for leaders worldwide.
