The Federal government has called an emergency meeting on Wednesday in response to a nationwide protest planned for August 1, 2024.
This announcement comes from a circular issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Cabinet Affairs Office, Richard Pheelangwah, on July 23, 2024, titled “Planned Nationwide Protest.”
The circular states: “You are invited to attend a meeting with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation regarding the above subject, scheduled as follows: July 24, 2024, at 10 am promptly, in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Conference Room.”
This meeting follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s plea, through his Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, for Nigerians to suspend the planned protest.
The protest is set against a backdrop of rising inflation rates in Nigeria, with core inflation at 34.19 percent and food inflation at 40.87 percent. As a result, Nigerians are experiencing a decline in purchasing power, which continues to drive up the prices of commodities.
