Agency Report –
Nuremberg, Germany – A record number of employees in Germany are working part-time, a study revealed on Tuesday.
The figure reached 40.1% in the second quarter of the year, according to the Institute for Employment Research.
The number of part-time employees rose by 1.3% to 16.971 million compared to the same quarter of 2024, while the number of full-time employees fell by 0.7% to 25.352 million.
While part-time work was an exception in the 1990s, it has now become standard, said IAB expert Enzo Weber.
Part-time employees work an average of 18.62 hours per week, which is also a record, the Nuremberg-based agency said.
According to the IAB, the number of people in employment across the country rose slightly year-on-year to 46 million in the second quarter.
However, employment levels stagnated compared to the first quarter when adjusted for seasonal and calendar effects.
“Even after two years of recession, there is a new employment record, but full-time jobs are still more than 200,000 below their peak,” explained Weber.
