Resident Doctors Begin 7-Day Warning Strike

Resident doctors have started a 7-day warning strike to demand the release of their kidnapped colleague, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, who has been held captive for over 8 months.

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) announced the strike, which affects all their centers nationwide. NARD President, Dr. Dele Abdullahi, stated that the strike began on Monday, August 26, 2024, at midnight.

The decision for the strike was made during an emergency online meeting of NARD’s National Executive Council on Sunday, August 25, 2024. The strike will last for one week, and no emergency care will be provided during this period.

Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a registrar in the Ophthalmology Department at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna, was abducted nearly 8 months ago along with her husband and nephew. While her husband was released in March, Dr. Popoola and her nephew are still in captivity.

A few weeks ago, NARD members protested at tertiary hospitals across the country, demanding Dr. Popoola’s immediate release.
