PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria (Chatnewstv.com) — The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has pledged to cooperate with Governor Siminalayi Fubara when he resumes office on September 18, marking the end of a six-month state of emergency in the state.
State party chairman Tony Okocha gave the assurance Tuesday in Port Harcourt while thanking residents, the APC’s national leadership and President Bola Tinubu for their support during the recently concluded local government elections, where the party secured 20 chairmanship positions.
“It is real that September 18 will mark exactly six months since the suspension of the governor,” Okocha said.
“As the six months elapse, he is expected to return to office. So, we will work with him. The State Assembly will cooperate with the governor, but if he deviates or delves into obnoxious acts, we will criticise and call him to order.”
Okocha disclosed that the APC had deliberately withheld candidates in Obio-Akpor, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni and Port Harcourt City councils, citing the political weight of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike in those areas. The three councils were subsequently won by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He said the APC is now focused on consolidating its strength across the state.
“Our target is to make Rivers 100 percent APC,” Okocha said, urging opposition politicians, including Wike, to join the party for “absolute peace.”
