PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria (Chatnewstv.com) — Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara announced Tuesday he has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), stating the move was necessary to protect the interests of the state’s residents.
Fubara, speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House in Port Harcourt, criticized the PDP, claiming it “failed to provide the needed protection and political backing for the state.”
The governor attributed his political survival directly to the nation’s leader, revealing he had met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday for what he termed a “state-interest consultation.”
“We have the full support and positive nod to leave where we are because we didn’t get any protection,” Fubara said. He added a stark assessment of the President’s role in the power struggle that has recently defined Rivers State politics.
“The truth is that without Mr. President, there won’t be any His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara. I would have been a former governor,” Fubara stated, adding that President Tinubu’s intervention at critical moments ensured the continuity of his administration.
The governor emphasized that his decision was made in the best interest of the state.
“Let nobody be fooled in the state. We have the people, and we have the support of the President,” he said, maintaining that his loyalty now aligns with the political platform that guarantees stability and support for Rivers State.
