WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on Monday to coordinate on a range of volatile global issues, including the push for a ceasefire in Ukraine and efforts to dismantle foreign adversary networks in Venezuela.
The high-level meeting at the State Department comes as the Trump administration intensifies its focus on the Western Hemisphere while seeking to navigate increasingly complex security dynamics in Europe and the Arctic.
According to a readout from the Office of the Spokesperson, the two leaders prioritized the need to secure global supply chains and prevent Venezuela from serving as a “hub” for hostile foreign actors.
“Secretary Rubio and Foreign Minister Wadephul reiterated the importance of denying Iran the ability to develop or obtain a nuclear weapon,” said Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott.
The talks also focused heavily on the conflict in Ukraine, with both diplomats looking to advance “efforts toward peace” as the war enters a critical phase. Wadephul, who stopped in Iceland to discuss Arctic security before arriving in Washington, underscored the necessity of a united NATO front.
“We will only strengthen security in the North Atlantic when we work together, in solidarity and united,” Wadephul told reporters following the meeting. “In this period of uncertainty and crises, this is of decisive importance. It is a clear signal to Russia that it should not try to threaten the NATO alliance.”
The dialogue took place against a backdrop of regional tension over renewed U.S. interest in Greenland. While the official State Department readout focused on security and energy, Wadephul noted that the future of the autonomous territory remains a matter for its inhabitants and Denmark.
“It is up to Greenland and Denmark to decide, and it is up to people in Greenland to decide,” Wadephul said, echoing the concerns of European allies while maintaining that the talks with Rubio remained “friendly and intensive.”
The two officials reaffirmed their commitment to the U.S.-German partnership, pledging to continue deepening cooperation on critical priorities ranging from nuclear non-proliferation to economic stability.
