WASHINGTON (CHATNEWSTV) — U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Saturday, reaffirming President Donald Trump’s commitment to ending the war in Ukraine and exploring potential areas of cooperation between Washington and Moscow, according to a State Department readout.
The call followed Trump’s recent conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, as the U.S. administration seeks to navigate the complex diplomatic landscape surrounding the ongoing conflict.
“The Secretary reaffirmed President Trump’s commitment to finding an end to the conflict in Ukraine,” State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said. “In addition, they discussed the opportunity to potentially work together on a number of other bilateral issues.”
No further details were provided about the nature of those potential areas of cooperation.
The conversation comes as the Biden administration’s foreign policy approach toward Russia undergoes shifts, with continued Western military aid to Ukraine and increasing international pressure on Moscow over its invasion.
Russia has not yet released its own readout of the call.
