WASHINGTON (CHATNEWSTV) — Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday in a high-stakes diplomatic effort to build on President Donald Trump’s recent conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Joined by National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Special Envoy Ambassador Steve Witkoff, Rubio sought to lay the groundwork for renewed U.S.-Russia cooperation, according to State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce. Lavrov was accompanied by Russian Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov.
“President Trump wants to stop the killing,” Bruce said in a statement. “The United States wants peace and is using its strength in the world to bring countries together.”
The meeting, held in Saudi Arabia under the auspices of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, resulted in three key agreements:
The establishment of a consultation mechanism to resolve diplomatic tensions.
The appointment of high-level teams to explore a path to ending the Ukraine conflict.
A commitment to future cooperation on geopolitical and economic opportunities.
“One phone call followed by one meeting is not sufficient to establish enduring peace,” Bruce said. “We must take action, and today we took an important step forward.”
The meeting marks the most significant diplomatic engagement between Washington and Moscow since Trump’s return to office, though it remains unclear whether the initiatives outlined will gain traction.
