KYIV, Ukraine (CHATNEWSTV) — Russia launched a drone strike on the Ukrainian capital early Wednesday, killing one person, injuring six, and damaging buildings in two districts, city officials said.
Explosions echoed across Kyiv as Ukraine’s air force warned of incoming drones and Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that air defenses were working to repel the attack.
“Two floors of a residential building were partially destroyed,” Klitschko said, adding that the body of a woman was later pulled from the debris, according to the city’s military administration.
The National Bank of Ukraine confirmed in a statement that one of its buildings was damaged by debris from a downed drone. In another district, fragments struck a non-residential building, Klitschko said.
“Even on New Year’s Eve, Russia was only concerned about how to hurt Ukraine,” President Volodymyr Zelenskiy wrote on social media, condemning the attack.
Kyiv’s military said it shot down 63 out of 111 drones launched by Russia overnight across multiple regions of Ukraine. An additional 46 drones were neutralized by electronic jamming, it added.
Russia has maintained a pattern of airstrikes on Ukrainian cities and towns far from the front lines during its nearly three-year-old invasion.
