South African music sensation Tyla captivated the audience and stole the show at the 30th MTV Europe Music Awards in Manchester, United Kingdom, on Sunday night, clinching an impressive three awards. Tyla, who has seen a meteoric rise in her music career, outshone fierce competition from African and international stars alike.
The 21-year-old artist secured the prestigious Best Afrobeats Artist award, defeating top Nigerian contenders including Asake, Tems, Rema, Burna Boy, and Ayra Starr. Her talent and distinct style also earned her the Best African Act award, where she outperformed prominent artists like Ayra Starr, DBN Gogo, TitoM & Yuppe, and Diamond Platnumz.
Adding to her victories, Tyla was awarded Best R&B Artist, triumphing over American heavyweights Kehlani, SZA, Tinashe, Usher, and Victoria Monét. Tyla’s historic night was crowned with an intimate acoustic performance of her hit single, Water, which left the audience in awe and marked a perfect end to her award-winning evening.
Reflecting on her success, Tyla expressed gratitude to her fans and the African music scene for embracing her sound. “This journey has been surreal. To stand here representing my continent means everything to me,” she shared with an emotional smile.
Tyla’s achievements follow a pattern of success on the global stage. Earlier this year, she clinched the first-ever Best African Music Performance award at the Grammys, as well as the Best Afrobeats Artist award at the 2024 MTV Music Video Awards, where she again topped a pool of Nigerian stars.
Meanwhile, Nigerian artist Ayra Starr, who had secured four nominations, including Best New Artist and Best Push, left without a win.
