Spain Stuns USA to Claim Victory in FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series in Orleans

ORLEANS (France) – In a thrilling upset, Spain emerged victorious by defeating the FIBA 3×3 World Cup Gold medalists USA with a final score of 17-14 in the FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series held in Orleans on June 23-24.

The USA team showcased a revamped lineup, including the return of Linnae Harper, but Spain proved to be a formidable opponent. USA sailed through their earlier matches against Azerbaijan, Sc. Yuanda, and Italy before meeting France in the semi-finals, a rematch of the 2023 World Cup Gold Medal game. USA prevailed with a 20-14 win.

Spain’s path to the finals involved triumphs over Portugal, Netherlands, and USA U-24. They faced Canada, the winners of the FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series 2022, in a highly intense match. Demonstrating a strong offensive performance led by Vega Gimeno, Spain secured a hard-fought 21-18 victory.

The final showdown between Spain and USA witnessed Spain taking an early lead and maintaining their advantage throughout the game. Both teams engaged in a tightly contested battle, with Breanna Richardson leading the charge for the USA team with 6 points. However, Spain capitalized on defensive lapses by the Americans, ultimately securing a 16-14 lead. Despite their efforts, USA couldn’t convert their shots, allowing Vega Gimeno to seal the victory for Spain with a decisive free throw. This marked Spain’s first win against the USA in seven years.
