ASABA, Nigeria — Police in Delta State have arrested a 28-year-old suspected internet fraudster for allegedly killing his friend during a dispute over a $1,000 transaction, authorities said.
The suspect, identified by police as Oghenegare, was arrested in connection with the death of Mr. Courage, his childhood friend, following an altercation on Jan. 21 in Agbarho community, Ughelli North Local Government Area.
According to Delta State police spokesman Bright Edafe, both men were involved in internet fraud, commonly known as “Yahoo Yahoo,” and fell out over the transaction.
“They had a disagreement over a $1,000 deal,” Edafe said. “During the fight, the suspect allegedly hit the deceased on the head, which led to his death.”
Edafe expressed concern over what he described as a rising number of murder cases in the state, blaming hot temper, drug abuse and the failure to resolve disputes peacefully.
In a video circulating online, the suspect admitted knowing the deceased from childhood and said the argument arose after the victim allegedly “logged him out” of the transaction process.
Police said the suspect remains in custody and will be charged to court as investigations continue.
