STOCKHOLM (ChatnewsTV) — Sweden’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs summoned the Rwandan Ambassador in Stockholm on Thursday to protest Rwanda’s role in the ongoing offensive in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
“The offensive by the Rwandan Defence Force and the armed group M23 is a violation of international law and the territorial integrity of the Democratic Republic of the Congo,” the ministry said in a statement.
Sweden’s action aligns with the European Union and several European nations that have condemned Rwanda’s support for M23 rebels. Both Sweden and the EU have repeatedly urged Rwanda to halt its backing of the group and withdraw its forces from Congolese territory.
“We call on Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to return to regionally led peace talks,” the statement added.
The Swedish government has not disclosed the response from Rwanda’s envoy.
