Telegram has introduced several significant updates aimed at enhancing security and reducing scams on its platform.
The new verification feature has been launched, which includes third-party account verification, improved search filters, and the capability to convert gifts into non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
According to a recent blog post from Telegram, the verification feature is designed not only to tackle misinformation but also to foster increased security and trust within the user community.
This marks a shift from the previous limitation where verification was available only to public figures and organisations.
Trusted third-party authorities such as regulatory bodies and educational institutions will also be eligible for verification.
Also, verified accounts will be marked with a unique logo, replacing the traditional blue checkmark, thereby making it easier for users to identify authentic accounts.
“This decentralised platform for additional verification will help prevent scams and reduce misinformation — with a unique proactive solution that sets a new safety standard for social platforms,” the post reads.
The firm said users or organisations must complete an application process to qualify for verification.
According to the blog post, Telegram’s bot API also allows verified entities to manage the verification status of their affiliated accounts.
“These accounts will prominently display the organization’s logo on their profile,” the company said.
Aside from the verification feature, Telegram said users can now convert gifts into NFTs, which can be traded on various platforms.
The blog post noted that Telegram would charge an undisclosed amount as fees to cover blockchain transaction costs when NFTs are traded.
Other updates include a new emoji reaction feature for service messages, such as when someone joins a group, and improved search filters for private chats, group chats, and channels.
