Third of German residents fear losing job to AI, dpa survey reveals

Agency Report –

One-third of German residents are worried about losing their job due to the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), a survey commissioned by dpa revealed on Saturday.

Conducted by polling institute YouGov, the study found 34% of respondents were concerned about their employment status due to AI, while 62% were not.

A total of 2,175 eligible voters took part in the representative survey in mid-August.

While no significant differences were observed between supporters of the country’s various political parties, workers living in urban areas and those with a low level of education were more likely to fear being replaced by AI in the future.

According to a survey published by the Ifo Institute for economic research in June, around 27% of companies in Germany assume that AI will lead to job losses in the next five years.

Around 5% of companies anticipate additional jobs as a result of AI, while two-thirds expect no change.

Since the US company OpenAI released its first large language model, ChatGPT, in November 2022, the development of AI models has made enormous progress.

The wave of AI models that have since been created by various companies have improved in terms of logic, efficiency, scalability and the simultaneous processing of text, images, audio, video and other formats.

In Europe in particular, security and data protection issues have also taken centre stage.
