Akin Rotimi, spokesman of the House of Representatives, has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu consulted the National Assembly before reaching his decision on the Rivers State crisis.
Tinubu in a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday evening, declared a state of emergency in Rivers.
The president suspended the state Governor, his deputy, and members of the state assembly and nominated Ibok-Ete Ibas, a retired vice-admiral, as the administrator of Rivers State.
Responding to people’s inquiries, Rotimi disclosed that leadership of National Assembly met with the President and National Security Adviser ahead of the broadcast, alongside key security chiefs.
He noted that the legislators were fully briefed on President Tinubu’s intentions, and they all unanimously expressed their support.
Rotimi said the formal letter, informing the House of Representatives of Tinubu’s decision and seeking approval in line with Section 305 of the Constitution, has been transmitted.
He added that the letter will be read during plenary on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, with further legislative action to be debated and decided.
