Berlin – The approach taken by conservative CDU/CSU candidate Friedrich Merz of “either you agree, or I’ll vote with the extreme right” was not mainstream but ideology, Habeck told delegates to a pre-election conference of his party.
His speech was greeted with enthusiastic applause.
Referring to Merz’s proposal to introduce a parliamentary motion next week, and possibly to accept support from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) if necessary, Habeck said: “Nothing about this is harmless.”
Merz has called for the mainstream parties of the centre and left to support the motion, but Habeck rejected this: “It cannot be dismissed as a strategic error,” he said, calling for Merz to change course rapidly.
