CAIRO (Oct. 2, 2024) — The draw for the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 Qualifiers will take place on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced. The event is scheduled for 14:00 Cairo time (11:00 GMT).
The prestigious tournament, which showcases local football talent from across Africa, will be hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania from February 1 to 28, 2025.
CAF revealed that the qualifiers will consist of two rounds played on a home-and-away basis. The first round will take place over two weekends, October 25-27 and November 1-3, 2024, while the second round is scheduled for December 20-22 and December 27-29, 2024.
Since its inception in 2009, the CHAN tournament has been a platform for highlighting African football’s talent and growing popularity. The most recent edition, hosted by Algeria, saw massive support, with thousands of fans attending and millions engaging globally across digital platforms.
“CAF’s objective of increasing the commercial strength of its competitions has seen CHAN’s commercial value rise steadily,” CAF stated. This includes a 60% increase in prize money, with the 2024 tournament winners set to take home $2 million.
The tournament is also a key preparation for Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania as they gear up to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Details and procedures for the draw will be communicated by CAF in the coming days, with fans encouraged to engage with the event on social media using #TotalEnergiesCHAN2024.
Past CHAN winners include Senegal (2022), Morocco (2020 and 2018), and DR Congo (2016 and 2009).
