WASHINGTON (CHATNEWSTV) — Former President Donald Trump announced a new trade policy proposal Monday, vowing to impose a “RECIPROCAL Tariff” on foreign nations, charging them the same rates they levy on U.S. goods.
“For purposes of Fairness, whatever Countries charge the United States of America, we will charge them—No more, no less!” Trump wrote Monday in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
Trump also suggested that countries with value-added tax (VAT) systems, which he claimed were “far more punitive than a Tariff,” would be treated similarly under the policy.
The proposal would penalize nations that restrict U.S. businesses or subsidize industries to gain an economic edge over America. “We are able to accurately determine the cost of these Nonmonetary Trade Barriers,” he said.
Trump, who has long argued that the U.S. has been taken advantage of in trade agreements, framed the plan as a way to restore fairness. “It is now time that these Countries remember this, and treat us fairly—A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD FOR AMERICAN WORKERS.”
He added that U.S. officials, including the Secretary of State and the U.S. Trade Representative, had been instructed to implement the policy.
The proposal is expected to spark debate among economists and lawmakers, with critics warning of potential trade wars and retaliatory tariffs from key U.S. trading partners.
