NEW YORK (Chatnewstv.com) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Thursday that U.S. President Donald Trump has shown “an important shift” in his stance on supporting Ukraine, following a series of meetings in the United States.
“We are returning home with an important shift in President Trump’s signals regarding support for Ukraine,” Zelenskyy told members of the Ukrainian community at the Ukrainian Institute of America in New York. “First and foremost, this is political support for Ukraine, strategic support for Ukraine — what will be in the future. But equally important is the tactical support — what is needed now, to endure.”
The gathering, attended by First Lady Olena Zelenska, began with a moment of silence in honor of Ukrainians killed defending their country against Russia.
“I want to thank you for this tradition,” Zelenskyy said. “We have no right to forget all those people who sacrificed themselves, who undoubtedly sacrificed the most precious thing — their lives — so that Ukraine would not simply live, but endure and prevail.”
Zelenskyy said Ukraine’s delegation held 34 events during the U.S. visit, including talks on sanctions, arms procurement, drones, and mineral cooperation. He emphasized joint efforts with the U.S. and European partners to strengthen sanctions against Moscow.
“We support the proposals of the United States of America to maximize the blocking of the use of the Russian Federation’s energy resources by other, third countries,” he said.
The president noted that American and European backing remained vital. “We see respect for Ukraine, we see flags on the streets of the United States of America and other countries. But above all, on the streets of the country that is crucial for us today in its strategic assistance to endure in this war and to win the war for Ukraine’s independence,” Zelenskyy said.
At the event, Zelenskyy awarded Metropolitan Borys Gudziak with the Order of Merit, First Class, for his service to Ukraine.
