MONS, BELGIUM (Chatnewstv.com) — U.S. Air Force General Alexus G. Grynkewich assumed command of NATO’s Allied Command Operations on Friday, succeeding U.S. Army General Chris Cavoli during a formal change-of-command ceremony at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Belgium.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte praised Cavoli’s tenure as Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), highlighting his leadership during Russia’s ongoing full-scale invasion of Ukraine and his efforts to modernize the Alliance’s collective defense.
“You have been an outstanding SACEUR, leading with honour and integrity,” Rutte said, crediting Cavoli for reinforcing NATO’s Baltic posture, defending critical undersea infrastructure, and establishing a new NATO command in Germany to enhance support for Ukraine.

General Grynkewich, the 21st SACEUR, brings decades of experience, including his role as Director of Operations for the Joint Staff and his background as a fighter pilot.
“With a deep understanding of the threats we face from the skies, and across other domains, I know NATO can count on you,” Rutte told Grynkewich.
The SACEUR post, held exclusively by American generals since its inception, was first occupied by General Dwight D. Eisenhower, who later became the 34th President of the United States.
