WASHINGTON (ChatnewsTV) — The United States has condemned the killings of lawyer Elvino Dias and parliamentary candidate Paulo Guambe in Mozambique, calling for a swift investigation and accountability for those responsible.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to their families and loved ones,” Matthew Miller, the U.S. State Department spokesperson, said in a statement on Monday. “We join the calls made by all four of Mozambique’s national political parties in urging a swift and thorough investigation. Those responsible for these crimes must be held accountable.”
Dias, a prominent lawyer, and Guambe, a candidate for the Podemos party, were both killed amid heightened political tensions in the country. The deaths have prompted widespread calls for justice and transparency.
Miller emphasized the importance of peaceful resolution of electoral disputes, urging all political leaders, citizens, and institutions in Mozambique to avoid violence and inflammatory rhetoric.
“We urge all state institutions, political leaders, citizens, and stakeholders to resolve electoral disputes peacefully and lawfully, rejecting violence and inflammatory rhetoric,” Miller added.
He called on all Mozambicans to file electoral grievances through official channels, stressing that the only legitimate way to challenge results and demand accountability is through the formal complaint process.
The killings have raised concerns about political stability in Mozambique as the country navigates a tense electoral period.
