ABUJA, Nigeria — United States forces delivered a shipment of “critical military supplies” to Nigerian authorities in Abuja this week, signaling a continued effort to strengthen defense ties between the two nations as Nigeria grapples with ongoing security challenges.
The delivery, facilitated by U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), is intended to support the Nigerian military’s counterterrorism operations and internal security missions.
“This delivery supports Nigeria’s ongoing operations and emphasizes our shared security partnership,” AFRICOM said in a statement Tuesday.
While officials did not provide a specific inventory of the equipment provided, the transfer is part of a broader strategic framework aimed at stabilizing the Lake Chad Basin and Sahel regions, where Nigerian forces are actively engaged against insurgent groups, including Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
The U.S. has long maintained that a secure Nigeria is vital to regional stability. In recent years, this partnership has expanded beyond hardware to include specialized training in air-to-ground integration, human rights compliance, and medical logistics.
“U.S. forces delivered critical military supplies to our Nigerian partners,” the command noted, reiterating that the logistics support is a key component of the bilateral defense relationship.
The handover follows a series of high-level security dialogues between Washington and Abuja intended to streamline military cooperation. Nigerian defense officials have previously cited the need for advanced technical support and equipment to modernize their forces against asymmetric threats.
Neither the Pentagon nor the Nigerian Ministry of Defence has disclosed the total monetary value of the latest shipment.
