WASHINGTON (CHATNEWSTV) — The United States and El Salvador signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Monday to advance strategic civil nuclear cooperation, strengthening bilateral ties and promoting energy security.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and El Salvador’s Foreign Minister Alexandra Hill Tinoco formalized the agreement in Washington, marking a step toward deepening nuclear collaboration between the two nations.
“This agreement represents a significant milestone in our partnership with El Salvador,” Rubio said. “By working together on civil nuclear initiatives, we aim to enhance energy security, economic prosperity, and ensure the highest standards of nuclear safety and nonproliferation.”
The United States and El Salvador share longstanding diplomatic, security, and economic relations. Officials emphasized that the MOU will serve as a foundation for broader collaboration, fostering economic growth and technological innovation in both countries.
“Nuclear energy holds immense potential for our nation’s development,” Tinoco said. “This partnership with the United States strengthens our commitment to energy diversification and sustainable progress.”
The MOU is part of a broader U.S. effort to expand civil nuclear partnerships worldwide. First introduced during President Donald Trump’s administration, these agreements aim to promote U.S. industry and workforce while reinforcing global security through responsible nuclear engagement.
U.S. officials stressed that the initiative aligns with broader efforts to enhance strategic partnerships and secure global energy stability. The memorandum sets the stage for future technical exchanges, regulatory cooperation, and potential joint projects in nuclear energy infrastructure.
