WASHINGTON (CHATNEWSTV) — The Justice Department announced Tuesday the forfeiture of two Miami luxury condominiums valued at $1.8 million, seized for violations of U.S. sanctions against Russian national Viktor Perevalov. The court-ordered default judgment marks a significant enforcement action under U.S. sanctions targeting Russia.
“Today’s successful forfeiture once again demonstrates that the attempt to hide assets behind nominees and shell companies is a risky short-term game with real long-term costs,” said Michael Khoo, co-director of the Justice Department’s Task Force KleptoCapture.
The properties were maintained, transferred, and leased in violation of U.S. sanctions imposed after Perevalov’s involvement in constructing Crimea’s Tavrida Highway following Russia’s 2014 invasion of Ukraine. Perevalov and his company, VAD, AO, were sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department in 2018 and later re-designated in December 2024 for their role in the Russian economy’s construction sector.
According to court filings, from January 2018 to March 2023, the properties were transferred to a shell company to conceal Perevalov’s ownership and continued to generate rental income in violation of U.S. law.
The case, investigated by the FBI Miami Field Office with assistance from local police, highlights ongoing efforts by the Justice Department’s Task Force KleptoCapture to enforce sanctions and counter economic measures against Russian aggression.
“Sanctions enforcement is a key component of holding individuals accountable and ensuring the integrity of global financial systems,” said Khoo.
