WASHINGTON (CHATNEWSTV) — The United States on Friday hosted the signing of a landmark Declaration of Principles between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, a move officials hailed as a potential turning point in one of Africa’s most volatile regions.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio convened the ceremony in Washington, where DRC Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner and Rwandan Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe signed the agreement on behalf of their respective governments.
“The United States is committed to peace and stability in the Great Lakes region,” Rubio said. “This declaration marks a critical step forward.”
The signing was also attended by Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, Senior Advisor for Africa Massad Boulos, and U.S. Ambassador to the African Union Troy Fitrell.
The Declaration, which builds on efforts by the African Union and regional leaders, outlines a roadmap to end the protracted conflict in eastern DRC and promote cross-border economic development.
“This document reflects our shared vision for a peaceful and prosperous region,” said Wagner, the Congolese foreign minister. Nduhungirehe added, “We believe this framework can usher in a new era of cooperation and mutual respect.”
U.S. officials emphasized their continued engagement with both nations to uphold the declaration’s principles and help translate them into tangible results.
“This is just the beginning,” said Boulos. “Sustainable peace requires ongoing dialogue, investment, and accountability.”
