WASHINGTON — The United States has imposed visa restrictions on Colombian government officials and their immediate family members following Colombia’s refusal to accept two repatriation flights, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Monday.
“These measures demonstrate that America will not back down when it comes to defending its national security interests,” Rubio said in a statement.
The sanctions, authorized under the Immigration and Nationality Act Section 212(a)(3)(C), render inadmissible any individual whose entry could have adverse foreign policy consequences for the U.S. The move follows President Gustavo Petro’s decision to block repatriation flights he had previously approved.
In response, Rubio ordered an immediate suspension of visa issuance at the U.S. Embassy in Bogotá and warned that the restrictions would remain in place until Colombia fulfills its obligations to accept the return of its citizens.
“This action underscores our commitment to an America First agenda and the rule of law,” the State Department said.
The Colombian government has not yet commented on the restrictions or its stance on repatriation flights.
