WINDHOEK, Namibia (CHATNEWSTV) — The United States on Friday congratulated Namibia on its 35th anniversary of independence, reaffirming its commitment to a strong partnership with the southern African nation.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio extended his best wishes to Namibians, acknowledging the country’s hard-fought journey to democracy and its vision for a prosperous future.
“Today is a moment to celebrate Namibia’s past and, specifically, your nation’s hard-fought journey to becoming a vibrant, strong, and independent democracy,” Rubio said in a statement.
He also noted the symbolic significance of March 21, as Namibia not only commemorates its independence from South African rule in 1990 but also marks the inauguration of a new administration.
“March 21st – and the concurrent inauguration of a new administration – is also an occasion to celebrate Namibia’s bright future, one built on opportunity, prosperity, and innovation,” he added.
Rubio emphasized that the United States remains committed to strengthening ties with Namibia, supporting its development, and fostering economic and diplomatic cooperation.
Namibia, which gained independence in 1990 after years of struggle, has since emerged as one of Africa’s most stable democracies, with regular elections and a growing economy driven by mining, tourism, and renewable energy.
