WASHINGTON — U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday extended best wishes to Pope Francis on the 12th anniversary of his election, reaffirming the strong ties between the United States and the Holy See.
“The United States values its enduring relationship with the Holy See, which is grounded in our shared commitment to advance peace across the globe, promote interreligious dialogue, and protect religious freedom,” Rubio said in a statement.
Rubio also expressed personal well-wishes for the pontiff’s health, noting that Pope Francis remains “in the hearts and prayers” of his family and the more than 50 million Catholics in the United States.
“In this Jubilee Holy Year, with its message of hope and unity, we extend our heartfelt wishes for a peaceful celebration,” he added.
